South Dakota Horse Racing | Ft. Pierre, South Dakota | El Intochable
Posted by admin | Filed under Horse Racing, Specialty
Horse Racing in South Dakota is just a short season with only three races in Ft. Pierre and four races in Aberdeen. I was there for the second weekend of action at the Ft. Pierre series. The Thoroughbreds were fast and unrelenting as the took on the five furlough long track. The weather was perfect and the track in great shape. I was fortunate enough to share a conversation with the owner of the horse I featured below, El Intochable. He won his race by a length and them some. A great horse and a great owner! All shots were shot with my Canon 60D and processed in Camera Raw and Photoshop CS3.

Devils Tower, Wyoming

Devils Tower in Wyoming is a magical place. It is full of myths and legends. Many Native Americans believe it is a very spiritual place. I was fortunate enough to have visited this place on a quiet March afternoon, free from the crowds typically found in the Summer months. I had the thrill of hiking around the park and shooting the monument from all angles with my Canon EOS A2 film camera. All photos were taken on Kodak Ektar 100 color film. Post processing was done with an Epson flatbed scanner and Photoshop CS3.

Pow Wow’s are always special for me to photograph. The 29th Annual Lakota Omniciye Wacipi Pow Wow was an incredible experience for me. On several occasions throughout the afternoon I just put my camera down and watched the splendor of the event. The Lakota people put on a spectacular show and displayed their heritage with passion and energy. I always admire the connection they have to their culture and ancestry. I hope you enjoy these photos a fraction of what I did while taking and editing them. All photos were taken with my Canon 60D and editing was done in Photoshop CS3.

Wounded Knee, Pine Ridge Reservation | Wounded Knee, South Dakota

December 29, 1890 was a dark day in US history. For on that day the US Army 7th Cavalry detachment under Major Samuel M. Whitside surrounded an encampment of 300 Lakota Native Americans that they were escorting to waiting trains and proceeded to disarm them. Confusion quickly ensued and the end result was the Wounded Knee Massacre. More than two thirds killed were women and children. I, as an American citizen, was compelled to visit this site. To actually see it and talk to the wonderful hostess, LaTosha, helped me visualize what truly transpired on that spot. I visited the site where the men were buried in a mass grave and where other tribesmen were buried. What I hope is that this bit of darkness will bring some light in the format of education, understanding, and tolerance.

Badlands | Badlands National Park, South Dakota

Unmistakable beauty that is the Badlands. I journeyed through the Badlands National Park in South Dakota on a recent December afternoon. It was absolutely brilliant. The light was perfect, the cold breeze off the high plains left me feeling alive and the desolation of the empty park let me take it all in on my own terms. One of the more memorable shoots for sure! I had with me my new workhorse, the Canon 60D. All post processing was done in Photoshop CS3.
